Gastroenterology
Gastroenterology is the study of the disorders and diseases of the digestive system.
In the UK, it is estimated that gastroenteritis cases affect about 1 in 5 people per year, of whom only 1 in 6 presents to a general practice. Virus infections cause 30-40% of the cases in industrialized countries, with the figure being higher for children.
Disorders may affect:
- Esophagus (swallowing tube)
- Stomach
- Small intestine
- Large intestine (colon)
- Rectum
- Liver
- Gallbladder
- Pancreas
