Hypertension
Hypertension is a chronic medical condition in which the blood pressure is elevated and consistently above the normal range; possibly occuring because of hereditary tendency, faulty nutrition, emotional tensions, or hormonal influence. Hypertension occurs when blood is forced through the arteries at an increased pressure.
Persistent hypertension is one of the risk factors for:
- Strokes
- Heart attacks
- Heart failure
- Arterial aneurysm
- Kidney disease
- Cardiovascular disease
One of the big problems with high blood pressure is that it hardly ever causes symptoms. Due to this diagnosis of hypertension is generally on the basis of a persistently high blood pressure, and usually requires three separate measurements at least one week apart.
