Paediatrics
Paediatrics deals with the care of infants and children, focusing on the development, health, and diseases associated with them. In recent years, behavioral and social aspects of children's health has also been incorporated.
Childhood is the period of greatest growth, development and maturation of the various organ systems in the body. Treating a child is not like treating a miniature adult. A major difference between pediatrics and adult medicine is that children are minors and, in most jurisdictions, cannot make decisions for themselves.
From birth through adolescence, regular health check ups and inoculations are common preventatives from illnesses, such as:
- Measles
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Pertussis (whooping cough)
- Polio
Providing effective drug therapy for babies, infants, children and adolescents remains a challenge for all those involved in paediatric medicine, with one of the major challenges facing pediatricians being the range of body sizes and weights that they face is far greater than in adult medicine.
Due to the range of aspects involved, it takes many other specialists working together to provide for the total physical, emotional and social well being of the child.
