Pain Management
Pain Management is the process of providing medical care that alleviates or reduces the symptoms of pain. It is an extremely important part of health care, as patients forced to remain in severe pain often become agitated and/or depressed, and have poorer treatment outcomes.
The two main types of pain are:
- Acute pain - Often has a reversible cause and may require only transient measures and correction of the underlying problem, with the pain gradually disappearing through the course of normal healing.
- Chronic pain - Often results from conditions that are difficult to diagnose and treat, and that may take a long time to reverse. Sometimes the result of a specific injury (such as an injury to your back or knee), an ongoing chronic medical problem (like arthritis, cancer, or shingles), or also possibly occuring for no apparent cause.
Considering the different causes and types of pain, as well as its nature and intensity, management can require an multidisciplinary approach benefiting from the input of Physiotherapists, Chiropractors, Clinical psychologists and Occupational therapists, amongst others.
