Respiratory
Respiratory is the study of the integrated system of organs involved in the intake and exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between an organism and the environment.
Respiratory problems range from mild and self-limiting such as the common cold, to life-threatening such as bacterial pneumonia or pulmonary embolism. They constitute the commonest reason for consulting a general practitioner, with one in seven people in the UK affected by some form of chronic lung disease, most frequently chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma.
Conditions commonly affect the:
- Nose
- Throat
- Larynx
- Bronchial tree
- Lungs
Active and passive smoking are major factors in the causation and aggravation of respiratory diseases. Air pollution may also be influential.
