Session 1 – Type 2 Diabetes and Insulin Therapy
Dr Stuart Bootle, GP and Health Care Business Consultant This presentation and large group discussion looks at insulin – what it is, what it does and how it works. We will consider the pathogenesis of Type 2 Diabetes, discuss the different therapeutic options and management strategies available for each patient. In exploring insulin therapy, we will review different insulin types, regimens and delivery devices, and understand how ‘insulin profiles’ can help us get the most out of this important therapy. |

Session 2 - Insulin Initiation Case Study
Small Group Work Identifying the right patients, helping them understand the need for insulin, and building their confidence in relation to using insulin requires a proactive and structured approach. Session 3 - Insulin Initiation – Reviewing the Evidence
Large Group Discussion This presentation and Q & A session explores the landmark 4T study on the effectiveness of different insulin initiation regimens at the initiation stage. We will also review the different basal insulins available and help delegates make informed decisions in terms helping patients accept the failure of oral therapy and the start of insulin replacement therapy. |

Session 4 - Insulin Intensification and Long Term Management
Large Group Discussion Type 2 diabetes is a progressive disease, requiring that treatment is constantly monitored to ensure it remains effective, especially when combination therapies are in place. This session looks at the options available when insulin therapy needs intensifying, with a specific look into the different pre-mix and mealtime insulins. |

Session 5 - Review of Devices
Demonstration The paraphernalia of diabetes therapy is growing all the time and keeping up to date with the technology can be a real challenge. This practical session reviews the various devices that are currently available and may be included in the patient’s plan for achieving long-term blood-glucose targets. |

Session 6 - Insulin Management Case Study
Small Group Work and Large Group Discussion Integrating insulin therapy into daily life is a significant challenge for patients and professionals. This ‘case study’ will dissect this challenge, highlighting the practical aspects of living with insulin and insulin-related devices and will consider what changes you need to make in your own practice. |

Following the many lessons of the day, this concluding session provides an opportunity to: o Review and reflect on the day’s learning and understand it’s impact o Consider and decide what changes we need to make to our own practice o Draw up a simple action plan to help us take our learning back into practice |
